Find the right humidifier capacity for your space

Why Humidifier Size Matters

A humidifier that's too small won't adequately raise humidity levels. One that's too large may create excess moisture leading to mold. Use this calculator to find the right balance for your room size.

Humidifier Size by Room Type

Room Type Size Output Tank
Small Bedroom Up to 200 1-2 gal/day 0.5-1 gal
Medium Room 200-400 2-3 gal/day 1-2 gal
Large Room 400-600 3-4 gal/day 2-4 gal
Whole House 1000+ 6-12 gal/day Console/Furnace

How Humidifier Sizing Works

Humidifier capacity is measured in gallons of moisture output per day. The general rule is about 1 gallon per day per 200-300 square feet of space.

Output (gal/day) = Room Area (sq ft) / 250
  1. 1 Measure your room's length and width in feet
  2. 2 Calculate the area (length × width)
  3. 3 Divide by 250 for minimum gallon/day output
  4. 4 Consider ceiling height - add 20% for ceilings over 9 feet

Room Size Tips

Tight, well-sealed homes retain humidity better - you may need less output
Drafty homes or those with forced-air heating lose humidity faster
Winter months require more humidification due to dry heated air
Consider multiple units for multi-story homes instead of one large unit

Room Size FAQ

Should I get a larger humidifier than recommended?
A slightly larger unit can run on lower settings, which is quieter and extends time between refills. However, oversizing too much wastes money and can cause excess moisture.
How do I know if my humidifier is the right size?
Use a hygrometer to measure humidity. If it takes many hours to reach 40-50% or never gets there, your humidifier is undersized. If humidity goes above 50% quickly, it may be oversized.
What about whole-house humidifiers?
Furnace-mounted whole-house humidifiers connect to your HVAC system and can humidify 2,000+ sq ft. They're more expensive but require no tank refilling and distribute humidity evenly.
