How Humidifier Sizing Works
Humidifier capacity is measured in gallons of moisture output per day. The general rule is about 1 gallon per day per 200-300 square feet of space.
Output (gal/day) = Room Area (sq ft) / 250
- 1 Measure your room's length and width in feet
- 2 Calculate the area (length × width)
- 3 Divide by 250 for minimum gallon/day output
- 4 Consider ceiling height - add 20% for ceilings over 9 feet

Should I get a larger humidifier than recommended?
A slightly larger unit can run on lower settings, which is quieter and extends time between refills. However, oversizing too much wastes money and can cause excess moisture.
How do I know if my humidifier is the right size?
Use a hygrometer to measure humidity. If it takes many hours to reach 40-50% or never gets there, your humidifier is undersized. If humidity goes above 50% quickly, it may be oversized.
What about whole-house humidifiers?
Furnace-mounted whole-house humidifiers connect to your HVAC system and can humidify 2,000+ sq ft. They're more expensive but require no tank refilling and distribute humidity evenly.
